Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje
The Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje (UKIM) is a public higher education institution and the first state university in the Republic of N. Macedonia. The University represents an academic community of 23 faculties, 5 research institutes and 4 public scientific institutions. Nowadays, over 60.000 domestic and foreign students are following the first, second and third cycles of studies. Each year, more than 10.000 students are enrolled in all three cycles of the university, making UKIM the biggest University in N. Macedonia in terms of student numbers. Over 3.100 teachers, researchers, associates, as well as administrative staff, participate in the realization of the teaching and scientific process. All study programs in all three cycles of studies (536) are adapted to the Bologna process.

The Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje with its almost one-century existence is the oldest high education institution in the Republic of N. Macedonia, founded in 1920. In 1946 the Faculty of Philosophy – Skopje was established as the first unit of the first Macedonian University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius – Skopje”. Today, the Faculty of Philosophy is a modern, interdisciplinary faculty with 105 teachers and about 3,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate – Ph.D. studies and is considered to be one of the most branched out members of the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius University” in Skopje. The Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje consists of 12 departments, from humanities and social science disciplines, including: Philosophy; Pedagogy; History; History of Art and Archaeology; Classical studies; Psychology; Sociology; Social Work and Social Policy; Security, Defense and Peace Studies; Special Education and Rehabilitation; Gender Studies and Family Studies.
In addition to teaching, the Faculty of Philosophy has developed scientific research and international activities. To facilitate the teaching and learning process, as well as the research activity carried out, the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje has at its disposal numerous laboratories, departments, collections, and centers, such as: an aesthetic laboratory, an IT laboratory, a didactics and methodics laboratory, a multimedia laboratory, a museum collection, a psychological laboratory, a socio-demographic and statistical laboratory, a genetics and physiology laboratory; the Balkan Center for the Study of Peace, Center for Education and Research, Survey Research Center; National Center for Social Development Education; Test Creation and Application Center – Psychometrics; National IT Center for Defectology Research; Center for Education of the Roma Community; History Coursebook Center; HR Management Center; Center for Intercultural Studies and Research; Center for Integrative Bioethics; Lifelong Learning Center.
The Faculty is being firmly set in various international research databases, research consortiums, as well as in international University exchange programs. As a unit within the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University of Skopje, the Faculty of Philosophy is a member of the academic networks UNICA, ERA, CEEPUS, EUA, IAU, UNI-ADRION, and has also participated in Erasmus Mundus: Basileus, JoinEUSEE, Eraweb and Euroweb. The mobility of the teaching staff and the students through the international mobility programs is of exceptional significance for the internationalization of the educational and academic activity of the Faculty.

Assoc. prof. Jasmina Popovska

Jasmina Popovska is an associate professor at the Faculty of philosophy at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje. She completed a professional faculty fellowship at Florida State University, was the General Secretary of the Philosophical Society of Macedonia, Editor-in-Chief of the Faculty of Philosophy Annual Journal, Editor of Filozofija/Filozofija – A Journal of Philosophical Inquiry, and co-founder and organizer of the Philosophical Film Festival. Her research interests are history of Ancient, Medieval (Western European and Byzantine) and Renaissance philosophy, as well as methodology of the history of philosophy (publication: “Aims and Methods of the History of Philosophy: Plato as a Paradigm”, 2023).
In the last period, her research interest focuses on the virtue of phronesis in the history of philosophy and its contemporary developments, especially in the field of education. Also, she is a strong proponent for affirmation and development of philosophy education in Macedonia at all stages of education, handling with several research and educational projects (“Theoretical and practical update of the syllabi for the philosophical subjects (philosophy, ethics, logic, aesthetics) for high-schools”; “The historico-philosophical courses at the Institute of philosophy at the Faculty of philosophy in Skopje (1946-2021)”, and SOPHIE).
