Philosophical Society of Macedonia

Philosophical Society of Macedonia (PSM) is a civil society organization dedicated to promoting philosophy and teaching philosophy in the Republic of North Macedonia on all educational levels. The Society exists for 65 years, but in its current form, it functions since 2003. Starting in 2003, the Philosophical Society of Macedonia has realized many projects and established numerous collaborations with institutions and associations from the country on projects in the field of philosophy, as well as interdisciplinary projects. In less than two decades of work, numerous philosophical lectures, discussions, screenings, scientific conferences and symposiums have been organized. The Society is continually organizing events considering philosophical education, on scientific and applicative plans.

The Society is a member of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies – FISP (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés de Philosophie) (since 2006), publisher of one philosophical journal Филозофска трибина (Philosophical Forum) (since 1978), organizer of the Philosophical Film Festival (PFF) – manifestation comprising many cultural, scientific and educational activities (since 2014) and is certified organizer of the national high-school philosophical competition (since 2019). One of the main activities of the Society since 2004, together with the Faculty of Philosophy – Skopje, is organizing scientific conferences and symposiums celebrating World Philosophy Day, established by UNESCO in 2002, and is celebrated throughout the world. Among the numerous institutions and organizations with whom the Society has collaborated in the past years can be mentioned but a few: the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the French Institute in Skopje (Month of French Philosophy and the Philosophical Film Festival), Goethe-Institut Skopje (Month of German Philosophy), German Embassy in Skopje (Philosophical Film Festival), Confucius Institute at the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University – Skopje (Month of Eastern Philosophy), British Embassy (Month of British Philosophy), Cinematheque of Macedonia (Philosophical Film Festival), Turkish Cultural Center “Yunus Emre” – Skopje (Philosophical Film Festival), Association of classical philologists “Antika” (three interdisciplinary and international symposiums), EU Info Center in Skopje, University of Audiovisual Arts, European Film, Theater and Dance Academy – Skopje (EFTA), Faculty of Music – Skopje, Orthodox Theological Faculty “St. Clement of Ohrid” – Skopje, International Slavic University “Gavrilo Romanovich Derzhavin” – Sveti Nikole – Bitola, Faculty of Dramatic Arts – Skopje, Film Institute, Film academy – Ohrid (FIOFA), as well as the long and fruitful collaboration of the Society with the Institute of Philosophy, Philosophical Faculty – Skopje.

Apart from these activities, the Philosophical Society of Macedonia organizes promotions of books and lectures and is continuously dedicated to promoting philosophical education in the Republic of North Macedonia​.

Vladimir Gjurovikj

Vladimir Gjurovikj graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje – Institute for Philosophy in 2008. He worked as a demonstrator in Philosophical anthropology and Gender ethics at the Institute for Gender Studies and as a Philosophy high school teacher as well. In 2012 he was awarded a full scholarship from the AW Mellon Foundation for a postgraduate research at the Centre for Rhetoric Studies, University of Cape Town (under the mentorship of prof. Philippe-Joseph Salazar). The research was in mass media rhetoric with a focus on its role in the democratic development of the Republic of South Africa. Since 2017 he has been working as a teacher at Yahya Kemal College – Skopje (Philosophy) and at Yahya Kemal Elementary School – Skopje (Ethics). Since 2019 he serves as General Secretary of Philosophical Society of Macedonia and Coordinator of the Committee of Philosophy Teachers in N. Macedonia.

Ljupco Mitkovski finished his undergraduate studies at the Institute of Philosophy at the University "St. Cyril and Methodius" in Skopje. He was Chief and Responsible Editor (2013–2022) of the national philosophical journal "Philosophical Tribune" (18 issues). Chief and Responsible Editor and Technical Editor (October 2002–2010) of "Philosophy", Macedonia's first philosophical journal (29 issues), which became a worldwide publication in 2014. Since October 2013, he has been President of the Philosophical Society, where he participated in several Macedonian local, national, and worldwide philosophy and humanities projects. He has been on the Philosophical Film Festival's Organizational Board since 2015 and Finance Director since 2017. During his work at the Publishing house "Az-Buki," he was member of the Editorial Board of he contributed to over seventy editions of the philosophical edition "Philosophical Library" (2002–2014). He is also Editor-in-Chief or member of or Editorial Board in several anthologies, including "THE ANCIENT IDEAL OF KALOKAGATHIA" (2016), "CHRONOS I KAIROS – ANCIENT CONCEPTS OF TIME" (2017), "ZA DUSHATA" (2017), and "ΛОГОΣ И ТРОПОΣ" (2020). He technically edits "Ili-Ili" publishing house editions (about 70) since 2013. His works have been published in "Philosophy" and "Philosophical Tribuna," as well as other domestic journals in culture and art. He wrote philosophical poetry "Poetry Today & System of Poetry".

Specialist for Philosophy with Children

Martin Popovski, PhD, graduated from the Institute of Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje (2008). From 2009 to 2014, he held the post of demonstrator at the Institute of Philosophy, teaching subjects such as Philosophy Teaching Methodology; Academic Writing; Theory of Knowledge, and Techniques of Scientific Work. Additionally, at the Institute for Gender Studies, he taught Anthropology, Ethics of Social Work, and Science, Technology, and Gender. Since 2009, he has been a member of the Philosophical Society of Macedonia, and in 2011, he became a member of the Executive Board of the PSM. From 2014 to 2018, he served as General Secretary. In 2011, he became a member of the Editorial Board of the journal "Philosophy," which in 2013 grew into an international journal, and in 2013, he became a member of the Editorial Board of the journal "Filosofska tribina." His work in the Philosophy with Children field intensified when he joined the Philosophical Film Festival (2010), i.e., managing the Phil(m)osophy with Children segment within the Educational Program, in which he conducts workshops on Philosophy with Children and holds lectures like "Should we teach children philosophy?". He also delivered presentations at many celebrations related to philosophy, like "Philosophy for Children: Fundamentals, Approaches, and Challenges" (World Philosophy Day, 2014), published in the scientific journal "Philosophical Tribune," 2015; and "Phil(m)osophy for Children" (at the international scientific conference Third International Philosophical Dialogue "East-West") later published in the Proceedings of this conference. In 2021, he held the first course on Philosophy for Children in Macedonia, organized by the educational platform "Ucilnica" (Classroom) and in cooperation with FDM. In 2022, he attended the international conference "Philosophy with Children: Accomplishments and Projections" in Sofia, with a presentation on the topic "Philosophy with Children: The Macedonian Experience."
